Chrisは日本語もかなりできますが、現在フィールド中なのと、メールで分類学初論文後記を頂いたので本人の許可を得てBlogに載させて頂きます。

 

“it was a lot of fun”

This would be the best description. It started as simple species identification practice and turned into a paper. I got to spend every day for weeks looking through family keys and monographs from all over the world (America, Europe, Russia, Japan) trying to determine first which family, genus, and finally species the parasites belonged to. Then I had to learn about the host as well, reading extremely boring books about sticklebacks and their natural history, as well as figuring out how these parasites fit into the hosts’ history. Making drawings, taking measurements, and then relaying this information in a concise manner for the paper was a challenge since every discipline tends to use different descriptive terms, I’m sure only a parasitologist will understand the “description” and “remarks” sections of my paper hahaha. Next I want to start learning to identify nematodes, as they are another majour group and one I encounter frequently in the field.

 

ここに書いてある通り、元はポスドクの片平君が寄生虫の同定・分類をChrisに教えていて、「せっかくなので論文でも書いてみたら？」と提案して形になった論文です。英語Nativeという強みはありますが、Chrisの勤勉さと集中力は素晴らしいです！

 

「分野が違えば流儀も違う」

寄生虫分類学独自の専門用語や論文の書き方があるようですね。

分類学では先行研究、特にオリジナルの記載論文をもれなく探す必要があって、例えそれがドイツ語でもロシア語でもちゃんと読まないといけないようです。さらに必要とあれば分類・命名の元となた世界にひとつのタイプ標本を調べに海外に行くことも。。。

すごく大変そうですね。。。(^^;)

Chrisが「宿主（ホスト）であるトゲウオの生活史を調べなきゃいけない。extremely boring（恐ろしく退屈）だ。」って言ってるのも面白いです。自分としてはトゲウオの生活史が一番面白そうですが (^^)

 

「次はnematodes（線虫）に挑戦したい」

この意気込みも素晴らしいですね！
