A research paper on AVP2;1 (Onuh and Miwa) was published in Frontiers in Plant Science.

AVP2;1/VHP2;1 encodes proton-pyrophosphatase localized in the Golgi apparatus in plants. The enzymatic activity and expression was previously reported but its function in planta had not been revealed. We isolated one Arabidopsis thaliana mutant showing reduction in the sensitivity to boron deficiency in primary root elongation. A missense mutation in AVP2;1/VHP2;1 was responsible for the longer root phenotype. Our data suggests that AVP2;1/VHP2;1 functions in acidification of the Golgi apparatus and contributes to synthesis of cell wal pectin. We also propose that slight reduction of pectin reduce boron requirement for plant growth to increase low-boron tolerance.

Mutations in type II Golgi-localized proton pyrophosphatase AVP2;1/VHP2;1 affect pectic polysaccharide rhamnogalacturonan-II and alter root growth under low boron condition in Arabidopsis thaliana.
