Summary:
Mammalian hibernation is the phenomena in which animals suppress thermogenesis to reduce energy consumption, thereby achieving lower body temperature and surviving in a harsh winter with the shortage of food. Most mammals cannot endure severe and prolonged hypothermia that should be experienced during hibernation, but mammalian hibernators can. However, little is known about mechanisms of hibernation. In our laboratory, we aim to reveal molecular mechanisms for generating differences in the body between summer and winter, cold tolerance, and body temperature changes, all of which are assumed to be crucial for achieving hibernation.
